The Bachelor of Arts is the most diverse, most flexible, and most popular degree at The Australian National University. Each of its more than forty majors, in fields throughout the arts, humanities and social sciences, is taught by truly outstanding scholars to ensure that each student receives the very best education, is engaged with cutting-edge research, and learns to think like a researcher. These majors can be coupled with more than seventy minors and specialisations to broaden or deepen your study. The Bachelor of Arts can be combined with all other ANU undergraduate degrees except the PhB as a Flexible Double Degree.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of a Bachelor of Arts, graduates will be able to:

  • critically apply theoretical frameworks and research techniques to understanding national and international issues and problems;
  • identify, including through interrogation of databases, relevant sources of information from across a variety of media (print and digital, written and audio-visual) and judge the importance and reliability of those sources;
  • evaluate ideas and develop creative solutions to problems, including through independent pursuit of knowledge and making connections between different disciplinary approaches and methods;
  • communicate and debate both orally and in writing, and work with others, using a variety of media; and
  • understand the ethical implications of ideas, communications, and actions.

Human Rights

Courses in this Major address the human rights discipline in both theory and practice. Completion of this Major will equip students with an understanding of key issues relating to the study of human rights as a discipline, such as:

•The political, philosophical and historical development of ideas concerning human rights

•The emergence and role of human rights in international relations

•The interplay between human rights theory, law and practice

•Key contemporary theoretical debates on human rights

•The relationship between human rights and concepts such as social justice and equity

•The application of human rights theory in practice, such as:

- Issues around the implementation and enforcement of human rights standards

- Questions on the best mechanisms for dealing with human rights violations

- Human rights advocacy and social movements in the international system

•Contemporary case studies and issues

Applicants must have either completed recognized upper secondary studies to the required standard and recognised by ANU as comparable to Australian Year 12 or completed at least one year of tertiary study to the required standard. Applicants must have obtained a percentage between 59%, 74%, 77%, 82%, 83%, 87%, 95%, 97%. English Language Requirements: Academic IELTS: An overall score of 6.5 with at least 6 in each component of the test; a score of 570 with TWE score of 4.5 in TOEFL (paper based test); A score of 80, with a minimum of 20 in Reading and Writing and 18 in Speaking and Listening in TOEFL (internet based test); Cambridge CAE (Pre and Post): 58 overall with all sub skills at borderline or higher; 176 overall with at least 169 in all sub skills. PTE Academic Overall 64, minimum score of 55 in each section.
