Studying English teaches you essential written and oral communication expertise valuable in every field of work and helps you develop critical thinking abilities through textual, ethical and logical analysis, reading and interpretation. The study of English broadens your mind, kindles your interest in the world and connects you to the wealth of great literature created in English, both past and present.

What will I learn?

The English program offers you the opportunity to take a wide range of courses that reflect the diverse nature of English language literature. The design of the program gives you flexibility in what you take, allowing you to match your studies to your interests.

Research in the Department of English ranges widely—not just to different historical periods, but to surprising topics within and across those periods, such as fraud, medieval romance, the history of copyright, health, hockey, and nationalism. This research frequently shows up in our English courses, exposing you to the most up-to-date research in a field.

Dalhousie English graduates are creative, adaptable, culturally aware and have gone on to do outstanding work in a wide variety of fields. Here are recent examples of careers our alumni have successfully taken:

Future studies could include programs at the graduate level in English, library and information studies, or a degree in law or education.

English language requirement: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - 237 (computer-based) 90 (iBT) and no lower than 20 in each band; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5 overall and no lower than 6.0 in each band; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) – 81; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 61 overall and no lower than 50 in each skill; Cambridge English: Advanced - 180 overall and no lower than 170 in each band.
