Linguistics courses offer insights into the relationship between the brain, mind and language. By studying linguistics, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to understand foreign languages and the difficulties foreign students encounter in English and French.

Linguistic courses complement programs in Education, English, Languages, Psychology, Philosophy, Social Science, and Computer Science. Linguistics is a requirement for Speech Therapy, TESL, and other programs related to language processing and language engineering.

What you'll learn

This program provides students with a solid knowledge of basic concepts that form the foundation of linguistic theories including:

The modules of grammar (phonology, syntax, semantics).

The relationship between cognition and language (psycholinguistics).

The relationship between brain and grammar (generative grammar.

Mental processes involved in the acquisition of the first and second languages.

The program offers introductory and intermediary level courses in these topics. You'll gain enough theoretical and applied knowledge to be able to assess linguistics problems in day to day life.

Students who complete higher level IB courses and achieve a score of 5, 6 or 7 may be eligible for advanced standing and/or transfer credit in the following subject areas (except where otherwise indicated): Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English, French, Geography (Fredericton campus only), German (Fredericton campus only), History, Math, Physics (minimum score of 6 is required in Physics on the Fredericton campus). An international applicant is not required to submit proof of English Language proficiency if: 1) The applicant has studied in a high school in Canada for a minimum of 1 year and has achieved a minimum of 70% in Grade 12 English (ENG4U/EAE4U or equivalent course); OR 2) The applicant has studied in an English speaking high school for a minimum of 1 year or minimum of 3 years.

Students must complete high school for admission to the University of New Brunswick. They must complete six specific high school courses, according to their program of choice. UNB takes the overall average of the high school grades achieved in these six courses to calculate the student’s "minimum admission average", which is used to determine admissibility.

Course requirements:

Senior English Literature (60% or higher)

4 electives from group 1

1 elective from group 1, 2 or 3

Minimum admission average: 65%

The University of New Brunswick accepts qualified applicants from all countries. Entry requirements may vary from country to country.

International students require the following English language proficiency minimum scores for direct entry into most academic programs: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 85, CAEL 60, or Pearson Vue Test 59.
