The Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology have complementary interests in gender, sexuality, and women's issues. This joint major is for those who share these interests. Students are encouraged to plan their program in consultation with advisors in both departments.

Program Requirements

Students complete 120 units, as specified below.

Lower Division Sociology Requirements

Students complete a minimum of 18 units including all of

SA 101 - Introduction to Anthropology (A) (4)
SA 150 - Introduction to Sociology (S) (4)
SA 250 - Introduction to Sociological Theory (S) (4)
SA 255 - Introduction to Social Research (SA) (4)
SA 257 - Understanding Quantitative Research in Sociology and Anthropology (SA) (4)

Lower Division Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Requirements

Students complete 18 lower division GSWS units including two of

GSWS 100 - Sex Talk: Introduction to Contemporary Issues in Sexuality Studies (3)
GSWS 101 - Gender Talk (3)
GSWS 102 - Feminist Action (3)

Upper Division Sociology Requirements

Students complete a total of 20 units, including all of

SA 350 - Classical Sociological Thought (S) (4)
SA 355 - Quantitative Methods (S) (4)

Students must also complete an additional 12 units of upper division SA courses designated sociology (S).

Upper Division Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies Requirements

Students complete 20 upper division GSWS units. Courses which have high GSWS content will be considered for credit towards this plan. With the approval of the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, students may use as substitution credit one upper division course offered by another department.

Other English Language Requirements accepted: A minimum TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based).

Applicant must have completed Year 12 High School or its equivalent to Canadian High School.

Obtain a satisfactory score on one of the following English language proficiency tests.

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.5 on the Academic Modules with no part less than 6.
  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language internet based test) with an overall score of 88 or better with a minimum score of 20 in each of the four components (listening, speaking, writing, reading)
  • TOEFL CBT (Test of English as a Foreign language computer based test) with a minimum score of 230 including a minimum essay score of 4.5
  • TOEFL CBT with a minimum score of 250.
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) with an overall score of 70, with no part less than 60
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with an overall score of 65, with no part less than 60
