General Studies is designed to provide a broad, flexible, general higher education in music, including private lessons on the instrument that you play best. You'll have the freedom to choose many elective courses, allowing continuation into various professional options, including graduate degrees.

Students admitted to the Bachelor of Music program may follow one of four streams: General Studies, Advanced Performance, Scholarship, or Composition. Every stream includes four years of private lessons in an instrument or voice, along with ensemble performance (4 years), music scholarship (3 years), and non-music electives (4 years). The distribution of required and elective courses, in Music and in other subjects, is different for each stream. General Studies is designed to provide a broad, flexible, general higher education in music, including private lessons on the instrument the student plays best. Most undergraduates admitted to the School of Music are eligible to enroll in this program. In General Studies, you may select from three streams:

General Studies (concentrations include Piano, Organ, Voice, Opera, Guitar, Harpsichord, Orchestral Instruments, Historical Musical Instruments);
General Studies – Elementary Education Stream (preparation for studies in education leading to certification as a teacher in BC elementary schools);
General Studies – Secondary Education Stream (preparation for studies in education leading to certification as a music teacher in BC secondary schools).

Applicants must have Four years of English (not ESL) to the Senior Level; A minimum of three other full-year Senior-level academic subjects Three years of mathematics to the Junior level; SAT I or ACT + Writing (in countries where the SAT and ACT are unavailable, exemptions may be granted). Other English language requirements: CAE(Certificate in Advanced English ): Minimum score  of B; CAEL(Canadian Academic English Language assessment): Overall score  of 70; TOEFL Paper-based test with the TWE (Test of Written English): ): Minimum score  of 55 each for Reading, Listening, and Writing (4.0 on TWE); MELAB(Michigan English Language Assessment Battery with the MELAB Oral Interview): 85 final score with 3 in the speaking test; PTE(Pearson Test of English (Academic)): Overall score: 65, Reading: 60, Listening: 60, Writing: 60, Speaking: 60.

Graduation from a university-preparatory program at a senior secondary school: Higher Secondary School Certificate awarded on completion of Standard XII. Certificates must be official. Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor. Notarized copies are not acceptable.

English Language Admission Standard: Canadian Academic English Language assessment - Overall 70; Cambridge English Qualifications – 180; UBC Certificate in English – 600; International English Language Testing System (Academic) - 6.5, with no part less than 6.0; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - Overall: 65, Reading: 60, Listening: 60, Writing: 60, Speaking: 60; Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test - Overall: 90, Reading: 22, Listening: 22, Writing: 21, Speaking: 21.
