Students acquire Anishnaabemowin skills to develop and implement sustainable language programs in Indigenous communities and organizations.

Students practice their speaking skills through interactions in the classroom, language labs, in the community and through immersion activities. The history of Anishnaabemowin and current issues affecting revitalization and preservation are also studied. Incorporating the Anishnaabe world view, students examine the role and importance of Anishnaabemowin in ceremony, cultural values, and community.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • apply functional knowledge of the Anishnaabemowin language and writing systems to community language programming initiatives;
  • identify spoken Anishnaabemowin in a variety of contexts;
  • apply knowledge of Anishnaabe cultural values to develop community language programming initiatives;
  • promote community language programming initiatives applying relevant knowledge of Anishnaabe linguistic history and dialects;
  • recommend Anishnaabe-specific teaching methods in the development of an Anishnaabemowin program;
  • implement Indigenous language programming that addresses critical sociocultural issues;
  • apply sustainability best practices in the workplace and community to preserve the Anishnaabe language;
  • converse at a functional level in Anishnaabemowin through immersion practices;
  • identify entrepreneurial opportunities within community to revitalize and preserve Anishnaabemowin;
  • use the Fiero writing system to express ideas and tell stories;
  • lead language learning activities in small groups.

Career Opportunities

This program prepares students for a variety of language-related careers, including teacher of Anishnaabemowin as a second language, translator, language consultant, language specialist or storytellers. Students may find employment in school boards, communities, government agencies, education facilities and more.

Applicants must hold OSSD or equivalent, with Grade 12 English (C or U).

Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing.

Applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria to meet Georgian’s language proficiency requirements:

  • TOEFL Internet-based test (IBT): 79
  • TOEFL Paper-based test: 550
  • IELTS Academic only: 6.0
  • YELT: 1-5
  • TOEIC: 800
  • Graduate of Level 8 of Georgian’s GAAS - English for Academic Purposes: 60% in certificate or completion of level 8 with 70% or higher
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL): 60
  • Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE): 58
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): 170
