Taking Dalhousie’s Diploma of Emergency Health Services Management is a great way to get your foot in the door if you are looking for a rewarding career in the healthcare system. Whether you want to work in emergency or disasters management, you’ll get the skills you need to succeed or move up the ladder in your current career towards a managerial role.

What will I learn?

You will explore topics related to healthcare planning. Finance and laws pertaining to health. You’ll dive into more in-depth topics such as management processes. Human resources, EHS Systems Design and Principles of Community Based EHS.

Required Courses:

The one-year program features both academic and results-oriented curriculum. Students accepted into the DEHSM program take the following half credit classes:

Fall Semester - Required Courses:

  • HESA 4000 - Canadian Healthcare Delivery System
  • HESA 4004 - Healthcare Planning
  • HESA 4005 - Healthcare Financial Management
  • HLTH 4040 - Health Law for Non-Lawyers
  • HESA 4400 - Introduction to Healthcare Economics

Winter Semester - Required Courses:

  • HESA 4010 - Management Process and Human Resource Issues in EHS
  • HESA 4020 - Quality Improvement in EHS
  • HESA 4200 - Epidemiology for Managers

Summer Semester - Required Courses:

  • HESA 4030 - EHS Systems Design
  • HESA 4040 - Principles of Community Based EHS.

Students must have,

  • Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
  • A minimum overall average of 70% in five academic Grade 12 courses
  • A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 academic English and any other required subject.

English language requirement:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - 237 (computer-based) 90 (iBT) and no lower than 20 in each band
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5 overall and no lower than 6.0 in each band
  • Michigan English Test (MELAB) – 55
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 61 overall and no lower than 50 in each skill


  • Application deadline extended to June 1st for September admission
  • November 15 for January start
  • March 15 for May start​
