Что я буду изучать?

In this program, students focus on the planning, evaluation and administration of social/health care services within Indigenous communities. Students study business and community development with an emphasis on integrating cultural, social and health issues relevant to Indigenous peoples in Canada. Cultural teachings and smudging are integrated daily throughout each academic semester in social activities, individual program courses and Traditional Teacher/Elder visits.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • explain the generational factors that contribute to health, social and economic issues affecting Indigenous communities;
  • create a personal vision based on one’s identity and continue on a path towards a life-long wellness journey;
  • practice cultural awareness, sensitivity, and safety through an exploration of Indigenous culture, language, tradition, and healing;
  • implement accountability, professionalism and ethical behaviour in the workplace;
  • apply entrepreneurial strategies to support community growth;
  • develop strategies to assist Indigenous people to build healthier individuals, families, and communities;
  • investigate basic counselling skills using Western and Indigenous counselling philosophies;
  • prepare presentations, proposals, and workplace documents utilizing technology;
  • examine the effects that historical and contemporary legal and political decisions have had on Indigenous people;
  • explore Indigenous cultural traditions to promote environmentally sustainable practices in the community.

Practical Experience

All co-operative education programs at Georgian contain mandatory work term experiences aligned with program learning outcomes. Co-op work terms are designed to integrate academic learning with work experience, supporting the development of industry specific competencies and employability skills.

Career Opportunities

Students are prepared for entry-level administration and support staff positions within organizations such as community health centres, school boards, social service organizations, healing lodges and mental health centres.

Applicants must hold OSSD or equivalent with Grade 12 English (C or U).

Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing.

Applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria to meet Georgian’s language proficiency requirements:

  • TOEFL Internet-based test (IBT): 79
  • TOEFL Paper-based test: 550
  • IELTS Academic only: 6.0
  • YELT: 1-5
  • TOEIC: 800
  • Graduate of Level 8 of Georgian’s GAAS - English for Academic Purposes: 60% in certificate or completion of level 8 with 70% or higher
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL): 60
  • Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE): 58
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): 170
