Journalism - Broadcast students learn skills to develop a career as a Broadcast Journalist in electronic media, radio, television and web media. Develop story telling skills as a reporter using broadcast news gathering equipment, audio and visual, news writing, news casting, news editing, interviewing, researching, documentary/current affairs production, sports casting, newsbeats, news management, media law and media ethics.
Students operate four broadcast properties in Fanshawe College's School of Contemporary Media building, which is equipped with the latest in broadcast facilities.

Other Information:

Students should be prepared to learn during additional hours in the X-FM Newsroom and travel in the community gathering news stories. Fanshawe College has an agreement with Radio Fanshawe Inc. (X-FM) to provide "student staff" and services 24 hours a day from the beginning of September to May, continuously. Students will be assigned to work on the broadcast properties during holidays and weekends on a rotational basis.

Graduates of this program may apply for admission to the one-year Broadcast Journalism - Television News Ontario College Graduate Certificate program offered by Fanshawe College.

A laptop computer is to be purchased by the student, approximately $800.00. The cost of the laptop is included in the General Expenses stated in the Fee Schedule.

A CONNECT lab fee of $175.00 per academic term is included in the Additional Program Fees stated in the Fee Schedule. The CONNECT fee is to help cover the costs associated with the delivery of the CONNECT mobile computing program.

Students should not purchase a laptop computer or software until the College publishes the recommended configuration, models, software titles and versions for that academic year.

As a member of the CONNECT program, the College will provide to you Newsroom Remote software and various Microsoft software programs.

Learning Outcomes:

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

1. Report on stories in an accurate, detailed, balanced, professional, and timely manner.

2. Apply computer and technical skills to designated production and research functions in journalism.

3. Function both independently and as a member of editorial and/or production teams.

4. Analyze knowledge from communities, current events and public affairs, and history to interpret and express the context for designated journalism publications and/or productions.

5. Develop strategies for personal and professional development.

6. Comply with relevant Canadian legislation, standards, and the principles and practices of journalism.

7. Write and edit content for the designated media platforms.

8. Publish and/or broadcast content for the designated media platforms.

9. Apply production skills and use production equipment in the preparation and distribution of content for the designated media platforms.

English Language Requirements:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years.

Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years.

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of 53, with test results within the last two years.

A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than 162, with test results within the last two years.
