About the Career:

Typical Practical Nursing job duties:

Practical Nursing is the second largest nursing group in Canada. As a Practical Nurse, you’ll provide direct care with guidance from a registered nurse, physician or other health care specialists. You’ll be a valued member of a primary health care team, qualified to:

  • Administer medication to patients and monitor their effectiveness
  • Assess and monitor patients in various health care settings
  • Document assessments and report progress
  • Assist in rehabilitation activities
  • Perform examinations in consultation with doctors, registered nurses and therapists
  • Provide nursing care in acute, geriatric and home care settings
  • Assist clients with activities of daily living
  • Educate patients regarding health-related issues
  • Advocate for clients
  • Be a team leader and assign care to unregulated care providers

Credit Transfer (Articulation):

Athabasca University Post-LPN Bachelor of Nursing - Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) may be your fastest route to becoming a Registered Nurse (RN). Graduates of Stenberg’s Practical Nursing program are eligible for entry to Athabasca University’s Bachelor of Nursing (Post LPN) program.

Graduates from Athabasca’s Post-LPN Bachelor of Nursing degree then have the option to enroll in Athabasca’s Master of Nursing – Generalist or Nurse Practitioner program.

Students must have Completed a Grade 12 graduation or equivalent. Stenberg College entrance examination or equivalent. English Requirements: Academic IELTS or PTE with minimum scores in IELTS of 6.0 overall and a PTE score of 51.

Students must have completed a Grade 12 graduation, or equivalent (General Educational Development, Adult Basic Education), or mature student status as defined by the educational institution.

Completion of Stenberg College Entrance Informational Interview.

Successful completion of the Online Computer Skills Entrance Test.

IELTS Academic Module (scores valid for one year) Overall score of 7 or higher with the following minimum scores Speaking: 7, Listening: 7.5, Reading: 6.5, Writing: 7.
