The two-year Recreation Leadership Diploma Program is the foundation required to be successful in both academic studies in Recreation Management and in a career in the field. The program is for students who excel at working with people and are looking to improve the quality of life in their communities through active, healthy, and engaged connections. Recreation professionals help people improve their quality of life. It is a profession that builds people and by this action builds communities.

The Recreation Leadership Diploma Program prepares students for employment in the field of Leisure and Recreation. Graduates of this program can continue their studies in the Bachelor of Recreation Management Degree Program as third-year students.

The Recreation Leadership Diploma Program features the following:

  • Planning and running recreation programs and special events
  • Marketing and promoting recreation programs
  • Recreation facilities operations management
  • Organizing and staffing recreation programs and facilities
  • Public speaking skills
  • Facility design and operation
  • Professional presentation skills
  • Basic business skills
  • Leadership skills
  • How to partner with community groups, organizations and businesses

The market for trained recreation professionals is expanding. Changes in patterns of leisure time and growth in organized and spontaneous recreational activities have increased demands on recreational facilities and resources.

These trends have created attractive employment, reasonable remuneration, fringe benefits, significant vacation allowances and opportunities for self-development and advancement. Employment and contracting opportunities are available to graduates within:

  • community centres
  • ice arenas, aquatic facilities, seniors’ centres, golf courses, ski hills and fitness centres

Applicants who have attempted 24 credits or more of post-secondary study must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher.

Completion of BC Grade 12 or equivalent, or be 19 years of age or older.

English Language Requirement:

One of the following:

  • LET with a minimum level 3;
  • LPI with a minimum 26 on the essay and one of 5 in English usage, 5 in sentence structure, or 10 in reading comprehension;
  • English Studies 12 or equivalent with a minimum 67% (see note);
  • Literary Studies 12 with a minimum 67% (see note);
  • English First Peoples 12 with a minimum 67% (see note);
  • University-level English or communications course for which Langara awards transfer credit, with a minimum "C" grade;
  • A minimum "C" grade in ENGL 1120;
  • An "S" grade in ENGL 1107, 1108, or 1110;
  • IELTS 6.5;
  • Duolingo English Test with a score of 110;
  • TOEFL - internet-based (IBT) score of 80, with a minimum of 20 in Reading and Writing and 18 in Speaking and Listening;
  • CAEL 60 overall with essay 60; or
  • LEAP 8.
