The Interdisciplinary PhD program is designed to meet the needs of an increasing number of highly motivated, experienced, and highly qualified students looking for research opportunities which cut across disciplinary boundaries. In some cases, the research incorporates the insights of two or three traditional disciplines; in others the research itself is in an interdisciplinary field such as environment, health administration, international development, or information management.

The following interdisciplinary areas are particularly well represented at the university (the main relevant Faculties are indicated in parentheses): Ocean Studies (Science, Arts & Social Sciences, Law, Management, Engineering); Health Studies (Health Professions, Medicine, Science); Environmental Studies (Management, Health Professions, Arts & Social Sciences, Architecture, Engineering, Law); Management Studies (Management, Health Professions, Law, Arts and Social Sciences); and Health Informatics (Computer Science and Medicine).

Students will be considered for acceptance into the PhD in Health program only after completion of a Master’s degree from an accredited program. Applicants who have completed a research (thesis-based) Master’s will be eligible for the two-year residency PhD program and those who have completed a non-thesis Master’s program are eligible for the three-year residency PhD program. Cumulative GPA of 3.7 based on both undergraduate and graduate transcripts. For International applicants, an English Language Competency score of TOEFL >100 (Internet) or IELTS 7.5.

Applicants must have completed a Master’s degree which includes a significant, research-based thesis as part of the program. Alternatively, you may hold a non-thesis-based Master’s degree and present evidence of substantial, independent research experience, such as first-authored and peer-reviewed papers in the research literature. Applicants to have an average of least A-. Have a combined GPA of 3.70 or higher taking into account your Master’s degree and undergraduate coursework.

English language requirement:

  • Internet-based TOEFL (Academic iBT): 100
  • MELAB: 85
  • IELTS: 7.5
  • CAEL: 70 with no band score lower than 60
  • Dalhousie College of Continuing Education (CCE): A-
  • Pearson English Test PTE Academic: overall score of 65 and nothing below 54

Deadlines are February 1st for a September start, or October 1st for a January or May start.
