Program Requirements

This program is intended to prepare students to work as information and knowledge managers in a variety of sectors. The graduate courses in the program will focus on the information behavior of individuals, networks and organizations, and the nature of tacit and explicit knowledge services and strategies for identifying, capturing, organizing, storing, sharing, and using knowledge throughout the IM/KM lifecycle in order to learn and improve. Tools and techniques for codifying knowledge and facilitating collaboration in networks are also covered. This in an entry-level, graduate program that may lead to another graduate certificate or to the M.I.St. program, however, none of the courses taken in the graduate certificate can be credited towards the M.I.St. program once a graduate certificate has been completed.

Applicants must have earned an accredited or recognized university degree (equivalent to a McGill undergraduate degree, Bachelor’s) which would serve as a basis of admission to a graduate degree program at a recognized research-intensive university in the same country. The university degree must have been completed with a minimum standing of 3.0/4.0 or the equivalent, according to grading scale on the transcript. Other English Language Requirements: 567 PBT (paper based test); MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): a mark of 85% or higher; University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): a grade of “B” (Good) or higher; University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): a grade of “C” (Pass) or higher; Edexcel London Test of English – Level 4 – with an overall grade of at least “Merit Pass”; Edexcel London Test of English – Level 5 – with an overall grade of at least “Pass”; McGill Certificate of Proficiency in English or McGill Certificate of Proficiency – English for Professional Communication: Certificate of Proficiency awarded.

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. The applicant must present evidence of academic achievement: a minimum standing equivalent to a “McGill” cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 or a grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 out of 4.0 for the last two full-time academic years if the overall CGPA is 2.8 or higher.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 100 on the Internet-based test (iBT; or 600 on the paper-based test [PBT]), with a written score of at least 25 and a reading, speaking, and listening score not less than 20, or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum overall band score of 7.5. Applicants whose mother tongue is not English may be asked to demonstrate English language competency beyond the submission of the TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Application Deadlines: For Fall Term: Jan. 15 and for Winter Term: Sept. 1.
