The Graduate Certificate in Library and Information Studies is a post-master's program designed to assist library and information professionals currently holding an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited (or equivalent) master's degree to update their qualifications for advanced responsibility. The program may be completed in one or two academic terms, or on a part-time basis to a maximum of five years.

9-15 credits, three to five GLIS courses chosen in consultation with the student's adviser with the exception of the following courses:

GLIS 647 Research Project 3 (6 credits)
GLIS 689 Selected Topics (3 credits)
GLIS 695 Research Paper 1 (6 credits)
GLIS 696D1 Research Paper 2 (6 credits)
GLIS 696D2 Research Paper 2 (6 credits)

Note: students who wish to register for:

GLIS 694 Certificate Project (3 credits)

must first have their research proposal approved by the Committee on Student Standing and Academic Affairs.

0-6 credits of non-GLIS courses with a maximum of 3 credits from outside McGill. All such courses must be at a graduate level and receive prior approval of the student's adviser(s) and the School's Director.

Applicants must have earned an accredited or recognized university degree (equivalent to a McGill undergraduate degree, Bachelor’s) which would serve as a basis of admission to a graduate degree program at a recognized research-intensive university in the same country. The university degree must have been completed with a minimum standing of 3.0/4.0 or the equivalent, according to grading scale on the transcript. Other English Language Requirements: 567 PBT (paper based test); MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): a mark of 85% or higher; University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): a grade of “B” (Good) or higher; University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): a grade of “C” (Pass) or higher; Edexcel London Test of English – Level 4 – with an overall grade of at least “Merit Pass”; Edexcel London Test of English – Level 5 – with an overall grade of at least “Pass”; McGill Certificate of Proficiency in English or McGill Certificate of Proficiency – English for Professional Communication: Certificate of Proficiency awarded.

Applicants should have a master's degree in Library and Information Studies from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or equivalent). Candidates will normally have at least three years' professional experience following completion of their master's degree.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 100 on the Internet-based test (iBT; or 600 on the paper-based test [PBT]), with a written score of at least 25 and a reading, speaking, and listening score not less than 20, or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum overall band score of 7.5. Applicants whose mother tongue is not English may be asked to demonstrate English-language competency beyond the submission of the TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Application Deadlines: For Fall Term: Jan. 15 and for Winter Term: Sept. 1.
