Что я буду изучать?

As a student in our MA in Linguistics program, you will be able to conduct research on a wide range of topics from language variation and change, to theoretical linguistics, to topics in language revitalization and community based research.


Coursework: 9 units (6 courses)

  • Language requirement: one language other than English - see the UVic Academic Calendar on how you can satisfy this requirement
  • Thesis: normally 6 units of Ling 599
  • Public presentation: one conference/workshop/colloquium presentation (all programs except MAAL, non-thesis option)

Students must Meet the minimum admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies; Have completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related fields from an academic institution recognized by the University of Victoria; Meet the English language requirements; Have a minimum GPA of 7.0/9.0 (A- grade) on UVic?s scale, or 80-84% range. English Language Proficiency requirement: The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for international applicants is an overall score of 90 on the Internet Based TOEFL (IBT), with a minimum score of 20 in each of the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections. The minimum overall IELTS score is band 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each band.

  • Students must have earned the equivalent of a "B" average over the last two years (or equivalent of 30 UVic units) of your degree to be considered.
  • Practica, non-graded (pass-fail) courses, credit granted on the basis of life or work experience, or credit earned at institutions not recognized by the university will not be used in determining an applicant's grade point average or units completed.
  • Any courses used in the calculation of the entering average cannot be used as credit toward a graduate degree program.

English Language requirements:

  • TOEFL: the minimum score is 600 on the standard paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based test, or 100 on the internet-based test
  • IELTS: the minimum score is 7 on all components of the test
