Что я буду изучать?

The Master of Arts program normally extends over a 12-month period lasting from September to August, formal instruction being offered from September to April. Collaborative programs may take longer. The M.A. program may also be taken on a part-time basis. Students are strongly urged to take the 12-month M.A. if they are considering applying for the Ph.D. program in Anthropology at the University of Toronto.

Program Requirements:

Coursework: Students must complete 3.5 full-course equivalents (FCEs) including:

  • Students in the MA program are required to take one of the following courses: ANT3047H – ​Evolutionary Anthropology Theory or ANT4020H – ​Archaeology Theory or ANT6100H – History of Anthropological Thought
  • NOTE: for SCL students ANT6003H – Critical Issues in Ethnography I​​​ and ANT6040H –
    Research Design and Fieldwork Methods​ are also recommended. Students should consult with their advisors about appropriate methods of training
  • 1.0 FCE: ANT2000Y – M.A. Research Paper *
  • 2.0 additional FCEs: at least 1.0 FCE of which must in Anthropology
  • Exceptions to coursework requirements must be approved by the advisor and Graduate Coordinator

*ANT 2000Y – M.A. Research Paper (1.0 FCE) – Normally, students enroll in ANT 2000Y with their advisor. When a student is ready to submit a master’s research paper, the advisor, in consultation with the student, selects a second reader (normally, a faculty member in anthropology). The final mark for the master’s research paper is determined jointly by the advisor and the second reader. The advisor submits the final mark, along with the name of the second reader, to the graduate office.

Master’s candidates wishing to graduate at a particular Convocation must ensure that all requirements have been completed in time for degree convocation.

Applicants must have an appropriate bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, with a final year average of at least mid-B from a recognized university. Other English Language Requirements: TOEFL Paper-based Test Overall Score: 580, TWE: 4; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 85, with no part score below 80; Cambridge English Proficiency/Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 76 (with at least 22 in each component and 32 in the writing component).

Applicants must satisfy the department that they have the appropriate background to enter a particular program of graduate study.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The minimum requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): The minimum scores required for the different TOEFL tests are:

Internet-based Test:

Minimum Requirement: total score of 100 + 22 on Writing

Discretionary Range: total score 89-99 +19 - 21 on Writing

Cambridge Assessment English C1: Advanced or C2: Proficiency: A minimum overall score of 180, with at least 170 in each component.

Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): The minimum score required to meet our English facility requirement is an overall score of 70 and no part below 60.

Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTEST): The minimum requirement is a total score of 4.5, and no part below 4.
