Program Requirements

The M.A. in Art History with the thesis option requires the completion of 45 credits of coursework.

The program is designed to be completed in four semesters, but may be completed in three semesters. There is a time limit to complete the M.A. degree in three years (full-time).

Master of Arts (M.A.) Art History (Thesis): Gender and Women's Studies (45 credits)

The M.A. in Art History; Thesis option in Gender and Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary program for students who meet the degree requirements in Art History and who wish to earn 6 credits of approved coursework focusing on gender and women's studies, and issues in feminist research and methods. The final thesis must be on a topic centrally relating to issues of gender and/or women's studies.

Applicants must have earned an accredited or recognized university degree (equivalent to a McGill undergraduate degree, Bachelor’s) which would serve as a basis of admission to a graduate degree program at a recognized research-intensive university in the same country. The university degree must have been completed with a minimum standing of 3.0/4.0 or the equivalent, according to grading scale on the transcript. Other English Language Requirements: 567 PBT (paper based test); MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): a mark of 85% or higher; University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): a grade of “B” (Good) or higher; University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): a grade of “C” (Pass) or higher; Edexcel London Test of English – Level 4 – with an overall grade of at least “Merit Pass”; Edexcel London Test of English – Level 5 – with an overall grade of at least “Pass”; McGill Certificate of Proficiency in English or McGill Certificate of Proficiency – English for Professional Communication: Certificate of Proficiency awarded.

Candidates are normally expected to have a B.A. degree in Art History or in another closely related field; candidates may come from other fields such as literary studies, comparative literature, ethnic studies, Canadian studies, architecture, urban planning, film studies, history, performance studies, or philosophy/aesthetics, but must have taken at least 10 courses relating to the history and theory of some aspect of the visual arts, preferably covering a wide range of historical time periods and geographical regions. In exceptional cases, applicants without a strong background in art history may be admitted but with additional requirements arranged in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies to be completed before matriculation in the M.A. program.

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum acceptable scores are:
  • IBT (Internet-Based Test): 86 overall, no less than 20 in each of the four component scores
  • PBT (Paper-Based Test): 567
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): a band score of 6.5 or greater (Academic module)
  • University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): a grade of “B” (Good) or higher
  • University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): a grade of “C” (Pass) or higher
  • Edexcel London Test of English – Level 4 – with an overall grade of at least “Merit Pass”
