This graduate program stream provides the opportunity for advanced study in research and practice to support the needs of students with exceptionalities. This includes students with learning disabilities, emotional and behaviour disorders, sensory impairments, communication disorders, intellectual and physical disabilities, chronic health conditions, or students who are gifted.

Practices that promote inclusion, resilience, and the developmental health of exceptional populations across multiple contexts (e.g., school, home, community) are emphasized.

The general objectives of the special education focus:

To meet the advanced training needs of current or prospective special educators on contemporary research and practice within inclusive education.

To cultivate professional knowledge and skills in assessing, programming, and supporting individuals with special needs, and to enhance consultative and administrative skills within special education and related health fields.

To promote research and guide graduate students in empirically examining important issues in special education and related health fields.

Please note:

This program is suitable for achieving advanced TQS standing for previously qualified teachers, but none of our programs lead to BC Teacher Certification.

This program does not allow you to become a school psychologist.

Applicants normally have an undergraduate degree in civil engineering. We require a four-year (60 units) baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) from a recognized institution with a B+ average (6.0/9.0 GPA) in the last two years (30 units) of academic study. English language requirement: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 90 from the internet-based TOEFL (IBT). You must also score at least 20 points each in the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections. IELTS: Minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS. No individual component can have a score lower than 6.0. MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): A score of 90 on the MELAB will be accepted as proof of English proficiency.

Applicants must have completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by UVic. Equivalent of a minimum “B” average over the last two years of your degree. Any requirements specific to your program of study.

English Language requirements:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - For the internet-based TOEFL (IBT), we require a minimum of 90 with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 575 on the paper-based test.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - A minimum Overall Band Score of 6.5, with no score of less than 6.0 on each individual component on the Academic IELTS is required.
  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) - A score of 90 on the MELAB will be accepted.
