The Department of Medical Genetics offers the MSc in Medical Sciences (Medical Genetics) degree (see Medical Sciences) either as part of a postgraduate training program for post-MD applicants or as an independent degree program for those proceeding from a BSc. The PhD degree is granted through the Medical Sciences program (see The Degree of PhD). Research may be carried out in a variety of medical genetics-related disciplines for which staff in the Department have active research programs. Inquiries should be directed to the Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Medical Genetics.

Program Description:

The general description for the MSc program is as presented for all MSc programs in Medical Sciences .

Students are required to complete a minimum of ?6 in graded graduate-level coursework, and a thesis.

Required Courses:

MDGEN 601 - Selected Topics in Medical Genetics OR

MDGEN 605 - Directed Reading in Medical Genetics

MDGEN 602 - Special Topics in Medical Genetics

For students in the (MatCH) specialized umbrella scholarship program, course substitutions will be allowed with permission of graduate coordinator.

Students in the Maternal and Child Health (MatCH) scholarship program are also admitted to the Graduate Embedded Certificate in Maternal and Child Health Research. See Medical Sciences for the program requirements and the MatCH website for more information on the program.

Thesis:

Registration in 900-level THES

Seminar:

Students must present their research in progress at a seminar to the Department in the second year and fourth year (if applicable) of their graduate program.

Residence Requirement:

The MSc program has a minimum residence requirement of one and a half academic years (where an academic year is defined as the eight-month period from September through April) of full-time on-campus registration.

Length of Program:

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.

The Faculty's minimum admission requirements for the master's thesis and course-based programs are a four year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, in physical education, kinesiology, recreation or another related degree, with a minimum admission grade point average of 3.0 on most 4.0 grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on the most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent).

Minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.2 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution.

English Language Requirement:

TOEFL (internet based) minimum score overall 100 with at least 21 per section or equivalent,
Pearson Test of English (Academic) minimum score of 70,
CAEL minimum score of 70 with 70 per section,

The application deadlines: July 1 for September admission; November 1 for January admission; March 1 for May admission; May 1 for July admission.
