The PhD in Social Work program provides regionally relevant and accessible, advanced, and specialized education in social work. The program is research-based, stressing critical thinking and the production of original and significant scholarship. The program focuses on advanced social work practice and social work education, emphasizing commitment to people and social justice. The coursework period includes two, six-week Spring semester residencies (which students must attend full-time on the St. John’s campus), as well as a fall reading course and an internship, both of which can be completed in students’ home communities.

Other English Language Requirements accepted: The Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment with a minimum band scores of between 50 and 60 in each of the four skills tested (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking), with at least two band scores of 60 are the minimum requirements necessary for admission to the Marine Institute; A minimum score of at least 85 on the English Proficiency Test administered by the English Language Institute of the University of Michigan (MELAB); Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTEST) with a minimum band scores of 4.5 in the listening comprehension and reading comprehension sub-tests and a score of 4 in writing are required to satisfy Marine Institute English proficiency requirements; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum score of 85.

Applicants must have completed Master's degree in Social Work and three years of professional practice

The minimum English proficiency test scores are as follows:

Duolingo (until further notice) - A score of 105 or higher.

TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition test - A score of 80 or higher.

IELTS - An average band score of 6.5 or higher on the academic test.

CAEL - A score between 50 and 60 in each of four bands, with at least 2 band scores of 60.

CanTEST - Band Level 4.5 in the listening comprehension and reading comprehension sub-tests and a score of 4 in writing.

MELAB - A score of 85% or higher.

PTE Academic - Minimum scores of 58 in each of reading, writing, listening, and speaking

Application deadline:

September 15 for Spring admission (every second year; next intake in Spring 2021)
