About the Programs

There are two types of full-time graduate programs offered in all SUSTech colleges and departments: PhD Program and Integrated Master-PhD Program. Both types of programs are taught in English.

The PhD Program is for four years. The Integrated Master-PhD Program is for five years (two years for Master and the other three years for PhD).

Advanced metals and coatings: Design and fabrication of advanced alloys or coatings for wear and biomedical applications

Air quality and its response to changes in climate and human activity over Southeast Asia / South Asia / Africa: Application of a regional meteorology-air quality coupled model to study the air quality over Southeast Asia, South Asia, or Africa and its response to changes in climate and human activity

Modeling and remote sensing of global tropospheric halogen chemistry: Halogens influence global tropospheric chemistry by depleting ozone, oxidizing elemental mercury, and extending the atmospheric lifetime of methane. The project will focus on two aspects: modeling of global tropospheric halogen chemistry, and developing operational satellite halogen (e.g., BrO, IO, and OClO) products.

Environmental big data and AI: Development of computer vision and deep learning approaches to producing environmental big data and modeling hydrological and environmental processes

Watershed system modeling: Development of human-nature coupled system model for watershed systems, with a focus on the complex nexus of water, energy, food and ecosystems.

Digital Twins: (1) data-driven large scale distributed agent-based simulation (2) Big Data fabrics (3) Cognition and intelligence (4) smart city applications (5) IoT, Cloud and HPC.

Validation and Verification of AI Systems: Develop techniques to find defects in safety-crucial AI systems such as autonomous driving vehicles.

Deep learning in Smart Transport: Application of recent deep learning techniques to provide new solutions to existing transport engineering problems and facilitate advanced traffic management system.

Intelligent software engineering: Developing automated techniques to support the development and maintenance of intelligent software systems.

Experimental and numerical studies of buoyancy-driven turbulent flows: We use experimental and numerical methods and buoyancy-driven flows as a platform to study various flows occurring in nature and flows relevant to engineering applications.

New approaches in computational aeroacoustics: Develop new computational methods for solving large-scale aeroacoustics noise prediction problems, by combining the CFD and fast integral equation methods

Development of mesoscopic computational methods based on the Boltzmann equation and their applications to turbulent flows, compressible thermal flows, and multiphase flows: Develop new computational fluid dynamics methods based on the Boltzmann equation, to solve complex flows such as multiphase flows and turbulent flows. Industrial and environmental applications of complex flows.

Numerical study of turbulent flows: Theoretic and numerical study of turbulent flows and its applications

Mechanics of Smart Gels: Polymeric gels, consisting of crosslinked polymer swollen in a solvent, are smart materials responsive to various types of stimuli. The purpose of this research is to carry out combined experimental and theoretical study on the coupled multiphysics properties of smart gels, in order to understand the underlying mechanisms for interesting phenomena, and to enhance the performance of gel materials and gel-based devices.

Language competence: TOEFL 85 or above; or IELTS 6.5 overall or above, with no sub-scores lower than 6.0.
