The Doctoral Programme in Electrical Engineering comprises 24 research fields. The Programme is a joint effort of the Departments of Electronics and Nanoengineering (ELE), Signal Processing and Acoustics (SPA), Electrical Engineering and Automation (EEA), and Communications and Networking (TLV), as well as the Metsähovi Radio Observatory and Micronova - the Research Centre for Micro- and Nanotechnology. The completion of a doctoral degree equals four years of full-time studies.

Objectives of studies

Electrical Engineering is a broad multi-disciplinary doctoral programme providing graduates with the ability to work in a variety of fields ranging from traditional electrical engineering and the energy sector to biomedical engineering, robotics and nanotechnology, and communications engineering. Based on mathematical and natural sciences, the curriculum is flexible, allowing each doctoral candidate to compile her/his own combination of courses according to her/his own research interests. The programme covers all disciplines of the School of Electrical Engineering and allows multi-disciplinary co-operation across Aalto University. The main focus of the doctoral degree is on scientific research work. To complete a doctoral degree, the student must produce and publish a doctoral thesis as well as defend it at a public examination.

Structure of degree

The Doctor of Science (Technology) degree consists of

  1. an approved doctoral thesis
  2. theoretical studies (40 ECTS), comprising two modules:
    • research field studies (20—35 ECTS)
    • scientific principles and practices (5—20 ECTS)

Applicants must have completed: an applicable higher university degree; an applicable higher polytechnic degree; an applicable education completed abroad which in the awarding country gives eligibility for corresponding higher education.

Для иностранных студентов

To be eligible for doctoral studies at the School of Electrical Engineering, applicants must:

  • hold a master’s degree granted by a Finnish university or a Finnish university of applied sciences;
  • hold an applicable degree/a relevant study programme earned abroad that provides them with eligibility for corresponding university or university of applied sciences studies in the country where the degree was earned, and that provides them with the knowledge base required by the School of Electrical Engineering and corresponding to the Finnish master’s degree.

The minimum requirements are very strict. If your score does not fulfill the minimum requirements, you are not eligible to apply and your application cannot be accepted.

  1. IELTS (Academic only): 6.5, and 5.5 for Writing;
  2. TOEFL:
    1. iBT (Internet-based Test): 92, and 22 for the Writing section or
    2. PDT (Paper-Delivered Test) Reading 22, Listening 22, and Writing 24
  3. C1 Advanced: A, B or C
  4. C2 Proficiency: A, B, C or Level C1
  5. Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE A): 62, and 54 for writing;
