Что я буду изучать?

Due to the wide range of subjects in computer science and life sciences, the bioinformatics master's program offers a variety of options. The exact course of study depends on the respective inclinations and interests of the students. During their studies, the students are in contact with active scientists in lectures, seminars and project internships and are thus interested in basic and application-oriented research and introduced to current bioinformatics issues. To ensure true interdisciplinarity, the master's thesis is always issued and supervised jointly by a bioinformatician or computer scientist and a lecturer from the life sciences.

What are the special features of the course in Tübingen?

The very broad subject area in Tübingen includes the areas of genomics and transcriptomics, protein and drug design, microbiome analysis and systems biology.

The application subject enables students to either acquire knowledge in a non-computer science subject (e.g. physics, business administration, psychology, etc.) or to further deepen their computer science knowledge.

Advanced bachelor's courses can be introduced in the field of computer science, which simplifies a thematic realignment of the master's degree in computer science and, in particular, a move to the University of Tübingen.

Tübingen's computer science is one of the most research-intensive in Germany and is internationally known. It maintains close cooperations with important commercial companies and research institutes (e.g. three Max Planck Institutes in Tübingen) on a national and international level. It is characterized by the interdisciplinary collaboration with medicine, biology, psychology, media studies and many other departments at the University of Tübingen.

Career prospects

Very rapid technological advances in the use of high-throughput methods for data generation in the fields of biology, biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry mean that there is a constantly growing need for bioinformaticians. Since the requirements in this area are very high, the doctorate is often required as a qualification. Many graduates of the bioinformatics degree programs are currently doing their doctorates, often embedded in a biology work area in university-related research. In the long term, it can be assumed that almost every working group in the fields of biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry and other areas of application in the life sciences will include at least one bioinformatician.

Students must have a Bachelor’s degree. In addition, they must be fluent in German and solid in English.

Для иностранных студентов

The course is formally admission-free. Nevertheless, everyone, including students with a bioinformatics Bachelor's degree, has to apply formally.

The prerequisite for admission and enrollment is the quality of the degree (currently an average grade of 2.5 for the bachelor's degree or the preliminary study achievements and the affinity (content-compatible compatibility between bachelor and master) of the degree or the provisional study achievements of the intended bioinformatics master's degree apply.

The study and examination languages in the master's program Bioinformatics / Bioinformatics are German (GER B2-C1 (Testdaf4444 or DSH2)) and English (GER B2-C1 (Testdaf4444 or DSH2)). Courses and exams can take place in German or English; it is assumed that the students have sufficient German and English language skills.

The degree in the master's program for students with a bachelor's degree in bioinformatics (variant A) can also be obtained through the parts of the study program offered in English, in which enough credit points can be earned in English-language courses, all compulsory courses are held in English and in the above-mentioned English-language courses and compulsory courses, the course and examination achievements can be completed in English. Proof of very good English skills (at least B2 level) is sufficient for variant A students.

Application deadline: January 15th and July 15th.
