The master's program in Korean Studies / Korean Studies is a consecutive course that deals with the history, culture and society of modern Korea in a regional and global context .

As a specialty, the master's program in Korean Studies / Korean Studies offers a second major in addition to the monomaster , in which a double master can be acquired.

Profile of the course

The master's program in Korean Studies / Korean Studies offers a master's degree with a high level of technical and language competence. The students focus on central topics of the history, society and culture of modern Korea, whereby central topics include globalization, colonialism, the Cold War and division, migration and diaspora as well as popular culture and literature. The critical examination of the Korean peninsula, its location and embedding in a regional and global context open up diverse perspectives.

There are currently three professors available to assist students in the three thematic areas of history, society and culture.

Graduates also achieve a high Korean language level at level C1 / C2 GER (TOPIK level 6). In addition to the accompanying modules on the Korean language of science, the work with Korean literature and / or sources is required in every main seminar.

The languages ​​of instruction in the master are therefore German, English, Korean .

In order to deepen the competencies on a technical, linguistic and cultural level, all master's students can also study abroad for one or two semesters at one of the partner universities in South Korea.

Double Master MAKES - Master of European Korean Studies

The students of the master's program Korean Studies / Korean Studies have the opportunity to apply for the major MAKES at the end of the first semester . As part of this program, the second year of study in Korea is spent at Seoul National University and the master thesis is submitted there. Upon successful completion, the graduates receive two master's degrees - one from the University of Tübingen and one from the Seoul National University.

Career prospects

The master's degree enables entry into a wide range of professional areas in which language, cultural and country skills related to Korea are required. Perspectives in industry and economy, diplomacy, media and cultural institutions are opened. Practical skills are deepened through internships and practical projects.
