Mastering the world language holistically
With three inter-related strands - Contemporary Literature in English, Applied Linguistic Studies and Language Studies - the BA (Hons) Contemporary English Studies emphasises language proficiency and a level of academic excellence that can lead on to further studies in the discipline.
The BA Contemporary English Studies (BACES) programme aims to provide an all-round English education within Lingnan’s liberal arts environment, characterised by close attention to teaching and small class sizes. By engaging with a range of perspectives on language and literature in today’s interconnected world, students are equipped to be critical, creative, adaptable, and intercultural. Students are encouraged to participate in the university’s Student Exchange Programme in a country where English is the medium of instruction. A well-established Writer-in-Residence programme provides opportunities for creative expression and experiential learning.
All Lingnan students follow a common programme of general education and language courses along with their major studies. The BACES programme consists of both required and elective courses in two strands: Contemporary Literary Studies and Applied Linguistic Studies.
English Studies is the academic study of the English language across various contexts, cultures and genres. It includes the study of both literature and linguistics. The BACES programme emphasises the contemporary manifestations of English and is strongly cross-cultural, recognising the diversity of English in global communication and cultural expression. By encouraging students to engage with this diversity and to develop and articulate their own ideas, English Studies fosters creativity and develops communicative, analytical and intercultural skills.
The BACES programme is situated within Lingnan University’s liberal arts environment, which values small class sizes and close working relationships between students and staff.
We see English as far more than just a language, and our programme prepares students for a wide range of careers, including the media, corporate communications, and education.
