The master's specialisation European Law and Global Affairs has been specifically designed for students that want to extend their knowledge of European Law, but are also interested in studying the international relations of the European Union from other academic perspectives. The specialisation enables you to develop a broad perspective on the role of the EU on the global scene.

What will you learn?

This specialisation offers a unique multidisciplinary programme combining the study of European law and political science. It focuses on the main challenges facing the EU in the 21st century, and looks at the various legal rules and policy options that may be developed in response.

Students who have successfully completed this specialisation will be able to pursue a variety of job opportunities at the national or the international level. They may for example find work as policy advisor, consultant or lobbyist in the public sector, governmental agencies or other non-governmental organisations, or continue their career in academia.

A completed Bachelor's degree in related area, which is equivalent to a Dutch WO Bachelor. A proficiency in English: In order to take part in this programme, you need to have fluency in both written and spoken English. Non-native speakers of English without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following: A TOEFL score of 577 (paper based) or 90 (internet based); An IELTS score of 6.5; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of C or higher.

A completed Bachelor’s or Master’s degree*, or equivalent diploma in (European) Law.
Students with a degree in Politics, Governance, International Relations, Liberal Arts or equivalent, with a substantial number of courses in Law, are also eligible for admission to this specialisation. These students should provide proof of their knowledge of the basic concepts of Law.

A proficiency in English

In order to take part in this programme, you need to have an adequate knowledge of English. Non-native speakers of English** need to proof their proficiency by one of the following tests:

  • A TOEFL score with a minimum score of 90 overall (internet-based, with a minimum of 23 for writing) or 575 (paper-based).
  • An IELTS score with a minimum of 6.5 overall (with a minimum score of 6.0 minimum for the components listening, reading and speaking and a 6.5 minimum for writing); or
  • A Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) with a grade A, B or C or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a grade of A, B, or C.
