The graduate diploma in screen arts (3D Animation) is a programme with a specialist discipline area that will promote and enhance the knowledge base, skills, and professionalism of creative media and digital film students.

Graduates can use industry standard animation software to create an animated film project. They can apply knowledge and skills associated with character animation and, depending on elective choices made, motion graphics and compositing, animation and interaction and audio techniques. This programme leads graduates to further study or employment in the screen arts sector.

Students are stimulated to develop an inquiring and analytical approach to problems and issues, using independent judgment and creative thinking. Graduates of this programme are dedicated, professional practitioners who are prepared for life-long learning, with the desire to constantly update their knowledge and skills within a changing work environment.

Course Content

BSA2253D Animation
Students will develop a critical understanding of studio production pipeline practice and asset management within a 3D production environment. Students will also research and identify the technical and narrative requirements of animation within the 3D environment.

BSA2263D Character Animation students will be engaged in critical analysis during the process of designing, developing and animating an emotionally complex humanoid character within a time intensive deadline.

BVA215 Studio Drawing 2
Students will build on the foundation of the first year drawing paper to reinforce and expand their observational, analytical and creative skills and knowledge. Students will utilise practical drawing tools in thematic and conceptual projects to explore the use of drawing as an art form. Students will analyse and identify the visual language used in a range of historic and contemporary drawing practices to begin to develop their own ‘voice’ within drawing practice.

BSA324 Animation Project
Students will build on knowledge gained in earlier papers strengthening skills required to operate within a deadline-driven studio production environment. Students will develop critical time and management skills, while working on a self- directed specialist animation project.

BSA325 Project Management
Students will work on a collaborative group project within a studio environment. Students will receive a brief and form a company to produce and promote a collaboratively driven project.

BSA326 Advanced Animation Production
Students will develop advanced animation techniques and analyse the needs and research methodologies of a project to achieve the most effective, efficient outcomes within the advanced dynamic simulations and special effects field.

Satisfactory Completion

To be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Screen Arts (3D Animation) students must have been credited with all required papers as specified in the Programme Schedule. The total credit value of the Graduate Diploma in Screen Arts (3D Animation) is 120 credits.

Applicants must have obtained at least an undergraduate degree in any discipline or be a mature student aged at least 20 years and supply evidence of at least three years relevant work experience. Each mature applicant must provide their curriculum vitae detailing any relevant work experience and academic achievements. The Programme Manager will use this information to assess whether the applicant is likely to successfully complete the Graduate Diploma programme. IELTS test - Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5; TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score 5 TWE); TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18); Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2 First for schools or C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill. OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42; Language Cert - C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill; Trinity ISE - ISE II with no less than distinction in any band.

Applications are open to Bachelor degree graduates who can demonstrate equivalent, relevant, practical professional or educational experience in a related discipline.

Special Admission

Notwithstanding the above admission criteria, provided the applicant has successfully completed an approved course or programme, or has relevant industry experience, which is deemed to meet the required standard for entry, the applicant may be admitted to the programme.

Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of their work with their application

  • University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations – FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill. OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PToE (Academic score of 50)
  • City and Guilds IESOL – B2 Communicator with a score of 66
