Globalisation and the increased interconnectedness created by the rapid flow of capital, people, goods, images and ideologies across national boundaries requires a new set of specialised educational tools. The two-year Master programme in Globalisation and Sustainable Development prepares students to analyse the complex interactions between the political, economic, cultural and social trends which are having profound effects on our contemporary world.

Programme Components

The master's programme in Globalisation and Sustainable Development involves two years of full-time studies in Trondheim. The workload for a full-time student for one academic year is 60 credits.

The programme is structured around core courses and elective courses (7.5 credits). In addition, the programme consists of an internship (30 credits) and a master's thesis (30 credits).

Career Prospects

The Master's programme in Globalisation and Sustainable Development is designed to provide it`s students with specialist knowledge and transferable analytical skills to pursue careers in a range of fields where an understanding of complex global processes is of particular relevance. Graduates from the programme have gone on to work in a range of fields including global corporations, non-governmental organisations and international campaigning groups, while other have pursued careers in academia.

Students enrolled in the programme currently have the opportunity to carry out work placements in a variety of working contexts, including telecommunications, oil and shipping, local government, global NGOs working on environmental, health and educational issues and with multilateral institutions such as the UN.

Learning outcome

A candidate who has completed his or her qualification should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:


• has obtained knowledge about globalization and sustainable development taking into account both global and local perspectives

• has specialist knowledge about central themes and cutting edge research relevant for the program area

• has acquired thorough knowledge about the major theories and methods in globalization and development research

• can apply knowledge about globalization and sustainable development in an internship


• is able to apply theoretical concepts in analyzing a variety of questions related to globalization and sustainable development

• is able to identify and work on relevant research questions within the program area

• will critically relate to different sources and types of information and use appropriate methods in research

• can conduct a limited research project independently, but under supervision and in accordance with existing ethical norms and guidelines

• contribute to critical reflection to globalization and sustainable development that can contribute to new insights of the program area

General competence​

• has command over the particular discourses and analytical concepts of the globalization and development research field

• can apply the acquired knowledge and skills to new research areas in order to implement advanced work tasks and projects and is able to disseminate independent work

• work effectively with cross-disciplinary problems on an individual basis as well as in teams, and be able to provide evidence-based solutions to situations, which are complex and require new approaches

• independently assess and organize the learning process and assume responsibility for continuous professional development with a view to life-long learning

Applicant must have A first degree in a relevant field with the Excellent academic performance. Applicants should prove English proficiency. Other English Language Requirements: A passing grade from videregående skole (Norwegian upper secondary school); TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum score of 600 points on the paper based test; University of Cambridge tests: - First Certificate in English - Certificate in Advanced English - Certificate of Proficiency in English; Pearsons Academic English test (PTE): The academic version with a minimum score of 62.

Admission to the programme requires a Bachelor degree in Humanities or Social Sciences with a specialisation of minimum 80 ECTS credits in one of the following disciplines:

European Studies
International relations
Political science

C requirement

To be accepted to the programme students must have at least an average grade of C (by the Norwegian grading system). A C grade, however, does not guarantee admission.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 600/90 paper based / internet based.
IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) with a minimum score of 6.5 or better.
