The MSc in Sustainable Architecture at NTNU aims at educate and train building professionals in the use and development of competitive methods and solutions for lowering GHG emissions of the built environment in a life-cycle perspective.

Job prospects

The MSc programme in Sustainable Architecture lies at the forefront of research, innovation and implementation related to reducing GHG emissions in architecture. Learning activities throughout the program are designed in such a way that the students are able to transfer the knowledge gained into their practice as future building professionals. The continuous focus on an integrated design methodology throughout the programme enables the students to perform in any building design team, both as co-workers and as leaders.

Learning outcome

After completion of the two years Master program the student will:


Know principles for lowering environmental impact of buildings and effort developed in research and praxis in this regard
Know the background and understand the reasons for a more sustainable development of the built environment
Know relevant architectural concepts and projects that have been developed in the last years as response to present environmental challenges
Know alternative green building concepts, recognizing their qualities and limits in lowering environmental impact
Understand the architectural potential of climate and principles behind climate adaptive design
Recognize materials not only for their aesthetic qualities but also in relation to their potential for environmental performance and impact on the environment
Understand a building life cycle and the environmental challenges related to materials’ decay and maintenance
Know alternative energy systems that could be applied in different building typologies


In an architectural design project, be able to define form and construction of the building in a way to compromise architectural qualities and the need for lowering its environmental impact
Identify and develop technologies for optimizing the building environmental performance
Develop integrated architectural design processes where numerical inputs provided by simulation tools or computational analyses of different kinds is used as the basis for the architectural design project
Read climatic charts and identify appropriate passive strategies to implement for optimizing the buildings´ environmental performance towards indoor comfort
Perform a life cycle assessment of the building and be able to use results of LCA analyses as the basis for defining form and construction of the building
Use advanced simulation tools for environmental performance analyses and identify the correct energy system to use in a specific building
Able to structure a research work and write in proper academic language

General competence:

Recognizing environmental challenges behind an extensive development of the built environment
Besides the environment, taking responsibility for the social and economical sustainability of architectural design projects
Critical understanding of alternative green building concepts that could be used at different scales
Maturing ethical values and a sensitive approach to architectural practice
Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams

Applicant must have A first degree in a relevant field with the Excellent academic performance. Applicants should prove English proficiency. Other English Language Requirements: A passing grade from videregående skole (Norwegian upper secondary school); TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum score of 600 points on the paper based test; University of Cambridge tests: - First Certificate in English - Certificate in Advanced English - Certificate of Proficiency in English; Pearsons Academic English test (PTE): The academic version with a minimum score of 62.

The programme is open to both international and Norwegian students with a 3-year Bachelor Degree in Architecture, Engineering or Urban Planning.

Students with a background in other relevant fields may also be considered for admission, further to a discussion with the Master coordinator and Advisory Board. A minimum of 30 ECTS related to architectural design or building construction is generally required in order to get access into the programme.

To be eligible to apply you will need to have at least one of the requisites in the list below:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):

Minimum score of 90 points on the internet based test
minimum score of 600 points on the paper based test

IELTS (International English Language Testing Service)

academic test with a minimum overall band score of 6.5
