WHO IS THE COURSE FOR

This is a one-year course which will extend the range of skills and techniques developed as part of the HNC in Computing qualification. It also extends personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in working life and thereby enabling you to make an immediate contribution to employment. It will also provide flexibility, knowledge, skills, and motivation as a basis for future studies and career progression in computing and systems development.

STUDY METHODS

You will be taught by highly qualified subject specialists by a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops. There will also be the opportunity to attend lectures from expert speakers. Taught lessons will take place for 14 hours a week and 1 hour a week of pastoral/ tutorial session. The teaching time may also include in-class software practical sessions and extra hardware practical sessions.

In addition, student will be expected to use the learning resource centre to do their independent learning to complete the assessments.

HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED

The course is assessed entirely through coursework. A variety of assessment methods will be used which are designed to enable learners to meet the learning outcomes for the module and experience a range of methods in preparation for further study or employment. This includes written essays, reports, presentations, video, practical observations (including 95% written assignments, 3% group work, 2% presentations).

WHERE NEXT - FURTHER STUDIES

This course can lead to direct progression to a Top-up degree in Computing studying the final year or to the second year entry of a similar degree or a closely related discipline at a University. It will also enable progression on to further study such as a Professional Development Qualification or vendor qualifications offered by Cisco, Microsoft, IBM, CompTIA and Oracle.

The HND in Computing offers a progression route to a number of roles in the IT such as junior web designers, junior programmers, system support assistants, database management, networking assistants, network administrator and IT help desk sector.
