English Language & Literature A Level is a subject for students who take pleasure in reading both journalistic and literary texts. If you enjoy reading, this will probably be your favourite subject. You will develop your enjoyment and interest in literary and non-literary texts and broaden your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of writing across the ages. English Language and Literature is a popular core subject and you will be able to combine it with any other mix of subjects. You will develop important skills such as critical analysis and writing skills which are highly valued by universities and by your future employer.

The Level 3 Advanced GCE in English Language and Literature consists of two examination components and one coursework component. You will be studying six main texts covering prose, drama, poetry and a variety of non-literary texts from all genres.

Component 1: Voices in Speech and Writing
Open book examination, lasting 2 hours 30 minutes, worth 40% of the total qualification.

• Section A: Comparing Voices - You will study Voices in Speech and Writing: An Anthology, literary and digital texts from the 20th and 21st century.
• Section B: Drama - Alongside the study of the Anthology you will explore the drama textA Streetcar Named Desire

Component 2: Varieties in Language and Literature : Open book examination, lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes worth 40% of the total qualification.

• Section A: Unseen Prose Non-Fiction Texts - You will study a wide range of non-fiction texts on chosen theme, in preparation to responding to an unseen text.
• Section B: Prose Fiction and Other Genres - One comparative essay question based upon the theme of Encounters.

The main texts for study: Wuthering Heights and The Bloody Chamber. You will produce two assignments:

• Assignment 1- two pieces of original writing: one piece of fiction and one piece of creative non-fiction writing.
• Assignment 2 - one analytical commentary reflecting on the texts and the pieces of writing produced.

English Language and Literature A Level can lead to many different opportunities in Higher Education and is an ideal option to choose for a broad and balanced introduction to university study.
