Birkbeck’s BSc Geography and International Development gives you the skills and knowledge to understand our changing physical and social environment, and how this impacts on the challenges facing our contemporary world, with a particular focus on international development.Led by leading researchers in the field, you will discover the multiple connections between space, place, culture, power and physical landscapes in which we live, addressing issues such as climate change, the causes and impact of global inequalities, and how we live together in an increasingly urban world. You will learn key geographical skills in your first year and then tailor your degree to your interests, by drawing from a range of option modules in the fields of:- international development- human and environmental geography- geographic information systems (GIS).These modules cover a wide range of interconnected subjects from globalisation to food security, water resources to gentrification, and race and social justice to nature conservation. You will also complete a dissertation or a literature review in an area of special interest to you, furthering the development of important skills in data collection and analysis.There are many possible careers with a geography degree, and through a mix of UK-based, local and international field teaching you will acquire theory and knowledge, practical skills, and research and project management experience, all of which will enhance your employability.If you opt for the Foundation Year route, this will fully prepare you for undergraduate study. Students are generally required to have: High School Diploma with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 PLUS one of the following: 2 or 3 AP (Advanced Placement) Examinations (Group A subjects) with grades of 4 or more AND 3 SAT Subject Tests with a minimum of 600 points each; for programmes with subject requirements, SAT Subject Tests should be in relevant subjects; Old SAT (Reasoning Test) with a combined score of 1,800/2,400 with 600 in each SAT section ; OR 2-3 APs (as above); for programmes with subject requirements, SAT Subject Tests should be in relevant subjects OR American College Testing (ACT) Programme with a composite score of at least 27 AND SAT Subject Tests OR APs (as above). An Associate Degree from a good institution with a GPA of at least 3.2/4.0 can be considered for entry onto a Bachelor’s degree. Please note that combinations of any of the above qualifications are also acceptable (e.g. an applicant with a HSGD, an SATR score of 1700 and two AP exams with appropriate scores for the course would meet minimum entry requirements).
