The four-year BA German and Serbian/Croatian is a joint honours programme split equally between your two languages. You will take modules not only in language (speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation) but also in cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, politics and other relevant field designed to complement your language learning. With a wide variety of modules on offer, you will be able to tailor your modern languages degree to your areas of interest.You will spend a Year Abroad in the third year, split between two countries where your languages are spoken. As well as learning German from either beginners or advanced level, studying German at UCL opens up a lot of opportunities. From the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 back to the teachings of Luther, the music of Bach and Beethoven, the writing of Goethe and Thomas Mann, and the theories of Marx and Nietzsche, Germany and the German-speaking tradition have occupied a central place in Europe and the world. You will have the opportunity to modules in medieval, early-modern and modern literature, cultural studies, literary theory, Austrian studies, the practice and theory of translation and language acquisition, modern German history and politics, cultural, social and political theory, and film studies.Serbian/Croatian is written in two alphabets: Latin and Cyrillic. Both alphabets have 30 letters, each corresponding to a particular sound, which makes reading and writing Serbian/Croatian easy. Serbian/Croatian at SSEES (UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies) is taught with small class sizes, which offers the opportunity to gain excellent language skills and a profound knowledge of Serbian/Croatian literature, history and culture that will prepare you for a wide variety of careers in Europe.UCL Is ranked 3rd in the UK for Modern Languages in the 2018 QS World Rankings and offers outstanding opportunities to language students and graduates.

Students should have one of the following: five AP subjects, taken in the final three years of high school or high achievement in three AP subjects, when combined with a High School Graduation Diploma with 3.3/4.0 plus a SAT I with a minimum score of 1950/2400 (old test) or 1380/1600 (new test), or an ACT of 29 in the Composite Score and 29 in the writing score (or combined English/writing Score if taken before 2015) or high achievement in combination of five distinct AP and SAT subject tests, to include at least three AP’s or the successful completion of one year of study at a recognised US university, Community or Junior College, with an overall CGPA of 3.3/4.0 (equivalent to a 2.1), when combined with a High School Graduation Diploma with 3.3/4.0 plus a SAT I with a minimum score of 1950/2400 (old test) or 1380/1600 (new test), or an ACT of 29 in the Composite Score and 29 in the writing score (or combined English/writing Score if taken before 2015) will be considered.
