Our International Multimedia and Journalism MA is suitable for new graduates and experienced journalists. You do not need a media background to join this course.

About this course

The MA is a practice-focused, theory-informed course that provides skills, strategies and theoretical understanding needed to step into careers in journalism and digital communications.

The course provides an international context suitable for students from across the globe.

You will have the opportunity to learn alongside and collaborate with professional journalists.

We work with a range of organisations to support high-quality journalism. You will hear from and work with experts and innovators and explore advances in journalism. There will also be the opportunity to experiment and develop new ways to do journalism.

You can take part in projects to expand your knowledge and skills, such as our Civic Journalism Lab collaboration with the BBC.

The course covers key areas of knowledge and professional practice which reflect the way journalists work today. However journalism’s role in society, how we do journalism, and careers in journalism is constantly transforming. This course is designed to be a ‘laboratory of inquiry’ and prepare you to successfully negotiate these changes, as you progress through your career in journalism or the wider fields of professional communication.

What you'll learn

Through creative projects, you will learn how to produce exciting journalism that communicates with and represents people in regional, national and global contexts.

In both digital-first and multiplatform contexts, you will produce and examine civic and socially minded journalism that affects real change, consider ways to diversify and develop income, learn to build digital brands and creative editorial strategies.

Your development

Whether your passion is hard news, politics, campaigning, the arts, fashion, sport - or you are still deciding – this programme will develop your:

You learn how to research, newsgather and select the best technologies for the story at hand.

Students should have a four-year bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA ranging from 2.8 to 3.2 out of 4.0 (admissions criteria will vary depending on which course they are applying to).

A 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent. We will also consider your application on an individual basis if you have lower or non-standard qualifications and relevant professional experience in: the media; broadcast journalism; print journalism. English Language Requirements - IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.0 in all sub-skills).; TOEFL 90 overall (with a minimum of 19 in listening, 20 in reading, 22 in speaking, and 20 in writing).; Pearsons 62 overall (with a minimum of 56 in all sub-skills).
