Child Development professionals are instrumental in shaping the social, personal, and intellectual makeup of children and adolescents. They have a great impact on the development of attitudes, values, skills, and knowledge of young individuals that will govern their adult behavior throughout life. More specifically, they help children explore their interests, tap into their natural abilities and talents, build self-esteem, and, ultimately, realize their potential through classroom instruction, guidance, play, and creative activities.

The Child Development major is designed to provide a broad base of knowledge related to the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of growth and development, as well as the care and guidance of children. It focuses on promoting understanding of the scientific study of children within the family, cultural, peer, school, and neighborhood contexts which influence their development.

The GCC Child Development programs intend to prepare graduates for careers in various work settings, including public and private child care facilities, youth programs, preschool education, hospitals, before/after school care facilities for school age children, human service agencies, counseling, as well as early intervention and advocacy services. Child Development is an excellent undergraduate major for elementary teachers and school administrators. It can also serve as a great foundation for graduate study in social sciences and professional fields (e.g., psychology, medicine, nursing, education, public policy).

Program Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this program, students will develop an understanding of young children, and of the multiple interacting influences on children’s development and learning in order to create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive and challenging for all children; understand and value the importance and complex characteristics of children’s families and communities; use this understanding to create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families and involve families in their children’s learning and development; articulate and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of observation and assessment, develop competence in the use of observation, documentation and assessment techniques and tools to support teaching and learning in partnership with families and other professionals; plan and implement developmentally appropriate, culturally and linguistically relevant experiences that promote and/or support development and learning for all young children; and identify as a member of the early childhood profession, understand and use ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to early childhood practice.

This curriculum is designed for those students who plan careers in teaching in a pre-school setting. The program requires completion of the 27 units of Child Development curriculum plus 16 units of General Education courses, necessary for the Child Center Permit.

The certificate is outlined in acknowledgment of the California Child Development Permit, which is issued through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The permit enables an educator to move along a career ladder which supports a hierarchy of professional goals and competencies relative to employment and leadership. The required courses listed for this child development certificate meet the requirements of the Commission on Teacher Credentialing for teachers of Child Development Centers, Extended Day Care Centers, and other publicly funded children’s centers; the requirements of the California Child Development Permits: Preschool and School-Age Matrixes, and Administrative Code, Title XXII for teachers and directors of state licensed infant/toddler, preschool, and school-aged programs; the recommendations of the California Community Colleges Curriculum Alignment Project.
