Polymer Chemistry Fundamentals
As one of the physical sciences, chemistry deals with the nature and properties of matter at the most fundamental level — molecular and atomic. In determining the properties and composition of matter, chemists are often able to develop new materials and find practical uses for them.
The B.S. in Chemistry - Polymer Option provides students with a greater concentration in chemistry and is accredited by the American Chemical Society.
Theory taught in the classroom is applied in undergraduate laboratory classes and research projects.
Professional Preparation
Coursework prepares you for advanced study in chemistry or a career in industry or government.
Chemistry is an experimental science that seeks to understand the structure and function of molecules. Chemists synthesize new materials, and study their properties and how they interact with other compounds. This BS degree offered by the department provides a great way to study polymers as an undergraduate with the opportunity to perform individual research with Akron's renowned Polymer Science faculty.
Career Opportunities
Degrees and Preparation
The B.S. degree in chemistry is designed for a student intending to pursue graduate studies in chemistry or a related science, or to pursue an industrial or governmental research career in chemistry. Chemists with advanced degrees often hold faculty positions at colleges and universities, or work in fields that connect chemistry with other disciplines, such as technical sales, patent law, company management or environmental sciences.
Career Outlook
Opportunities are expected to grow for chemists, especially in drug research, development, testing and manufacturing industries.
Graduates with experience in industry through academic laboratories, internships, fellowships or co-ops stand out among job seekers.
