The Department of Germanic Studies offers the Master of Arts degree and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Germanic Studies. Doctoral students may specialize in the fields of Film Studies, Jewish Cultural Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Second Language Acquisition, or Literature and Culture.

At least 3.00/4.00 for the final 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate study.

  • Baccalaureate Field No restrictions. A substantial background in German literature or culture is expected, as is proficiency in written and spoken German.
  • Grade Point Average At least 3.00/4.00 in all German courses and in the final 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate study.
  • Tests Required GRE General scores are mandatory for university fellowship candidates.
  • Minimum English Competency Test Score
  • TOEFL 80, with subscores of Reading 19, Listening 17, Speaking 20, and Writing 21 (iBT Test); 60, with subscores of Reading 19, Listening 17, Writing 21 (revised Paper-Delivered Test), OR,
  • IELTS 6.5, with subscores of 6.0 for all four subscores, OR,
  • PTE-Academic 54, with subscores of Reading 51, Listening 47, Speaking 53, and Writing 56.

The application deadlines are Feb/15 for Fall Semester.
