The Classics Department of the University of Arizona offers graduate study leading to the Master of Arts degree in Classics. Students may emphasize Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philology (i.e., the study of Greek and Latin languages and literatures), Latin Pedagogy, or Latin Philology. This degree provides graduate preparation in the languages and/or material culture of antiquity preliminary to entering a doctoral program in classical studies. Alternatively, the M.A. in Classics prepares recipients to teach at the community college level, in K-12 private and charter schools, or in the public school system (K-12) when accompanied by state certification.

Degree Requirements
Minimum credit hours: 34
1. Proficiency in French, German, or Italian.
2. 3 units of Methodology.
3. Qualifying Examination in Greek and Roman History.
4. Graduate level proficiency in one classical language, upper-level undergraduate proficiency in the other.
5. Minimum of 6 seminar units.
6. 21 units in Classics/History, Greek, or Latin courses.
7. Comprehensive Examination in Greek History, Roman History, and one section in either Greek or Roman Archaeology OR in Greek or Latin Literature
8. 3 units of thesis credit.
Master of Arts with Emphasis in Classical Archaeology
Degree Requirements
Minimum credit hours: 34
1. Proficiency in French, German, or Italian.
2. 3 units of Methodology.
3. Qualifying Examination in Greek and Roman Archaeology.
4. Graduate level proficiency in one classical language, upper-level undergraduate proficiency in the other.
5. 21 units of Greek, Roman, or Egyptian Archaeology courses (see #7 below).
6. Minimum of 6 seminar units.
7. Up to 9 of the 21 units in #5 above may be substituted with courses in related fields, with approval of Director of Graduate Studies.
8. Comprehensive Examination in Greek Archaeology, Roman Archaeology, and Ancient History.
9. 3 units of thesis credit.
Master of Arts with Emphasis in Classical Philology
Degree Requirements
Minimum credit hours: 34
1. Modem language examination in French, German, or Italian.
2. 3 units of methodology.
3. Qualifying, (translation) Examination in Greek and Latin.
4. 12 units of Greek author courses.
5. 12 units of Latin author courses.
6. 3 units of additional graduate-level work in Classics, Greek or Latin.
7. Comprehensive Examination in Greek Literature, Latin Literature, and Ancient History.
8. 3 units of thesis credit.
Master of Arts with Emphasis in Latin Pedagogy
Degree Requirements
Minimum credit hours: 34
1. Proficiency in French, German, or Italian.
2. 3 units of Methodology.
3. Qualifying Examination in Latin (translation).
4. 18 units of Latin author courses including LAT 580.
5. Comprehensive Examination in Latin Literature and Ancient History.
6. 3 units of CLAS 910 (Thesis credit).
7. 24 additional units of graduate credits in the College of Education.
8. 12 units of internship (student teaching).
Master of Arts with Emphasis in Latin Philology
Degree Requirements
Minimum credit hours: 34
1. Modern language examination in French, German, or Italian.
2. 3 units of methodology.
3. Qualifying (translation) Examination in Latin.
4. 24 units of Latin author (graduate level) courses.
5. 3 units of additional graduate-level work in Classics or Greek.
6. Comprehensive Examination in AP Latin Required Readings, Latin Literature, and Ancient History.
7. 3 units of Thesis credit
