The Master of Arts in East Asian and Pacific Rim Studies is a 12-course, multidisciplinary degree program designed for current and future professionals who require an in-depth understanding of this pivotal engine of the world political economy.

The curriculum is intended to equip students with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to conduct research and interpret developments in the Pacific Rim, as well as develop a foundation in an East Asian language. The program is highlighted by practical hands-on training. As a capstone experience, students complete an overseas internship.

The program prepares students with the crucial background needed for a successful career in this emerging region, whether in business, government or academia. Students may choose from four area concentrations.

Students develop an understanding of the political, economic and social issues of East Asia as well as an understanding of the role that language and culture play in its growing political economy.

Students accepted into the program may choose one of four concentrations: Negotiation and Diplomacy; International Political Economy and Development; Global Management; Global Communication.

Learning Outcomes

The East Asian and Pacific Rim Studies program has the following Learning Objectives: Introducing and comparing extant models of socioeconomic development with a special focus on those development models that have been used successfully in the Pacific Rim; Introducing the Sociopolitical Implications of the religions that are common in the Pacific region; Introducing and comparing models of trade; Equipping students with the quantitative and qualitative research skills needed to undertake effective planning, analysis, and implementation of projects; Identifying and fostering an appreciation of the prerequisites for successful governance and amiable trade practices within developing countries; Development of skills in negotiation and conflict resolution; Development of practical skills in problem-solving and in project management through an internship in the Pacific Rim; U.S. students will be expected to do their internship in Northeast or Southeast Asia and students from Asia will be encouraged to pursue an internship in Latin America or in a country other than their own in East Asia; Development of a at least a working knowledge of an East Asian language – normally Chinese (Mandarin), Korean, Japanese, or Russian.

Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.

Для иностранных студентов

Student must have: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or recognized international institution; Recommended cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.20 or higher; Two years of college level Asian language coursework or the equivalent; Students who have not completed this requirement but feel that they have language competency to this level may take an oral and written exam, confirming such competency or they may complete the language requirement at the University of Bridgeport or at another regionally accredited institution of higher education prior to the conclusion of the degree program.

Those whose native language is not English are also required to show English language proficiency. You can demonstrate proof of English Language competency by meeting any one of the criteria listed below: A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (PBT), 213 (CBT), or 80 (IBT) for graduates (postgraduates); A minimum IELTS (Cambridge Testing) Band score of 6.5 for graduates (post-graduates); An official letter certifying completion of ELS (English Language Service) through level 112; An official letter certifying completion of CSE (The Center for English Studies) through level 7.5; A Michigan English Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 77 or above for graduates; A Prueba de Aptitud Academica (PAA) English achievement score of 500 or above; Minimum PTE Academic score of 53 for graduates (postgraduates).
