The Master of Arts program in Speech-Language Pathology is designed to provide the academic and clinical education to prepare graduates to meet the existing and emerging demands of the profession. It is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and is deemed to be licensure-qualifying by the New York State Board of Professional Licensing of the New York State Education Department.

Unique Characteristics of the Program

This program offers graduate students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skill areas to meet the requirements for ASHA Certification and New York State Licensure. Resources available to the student include the Computer Center and Health Education Resource Center. The SJU Speech and Hearing Center is located on Union Turnpike at 152nd Street. The Center serves as a training facility for students while offering diagnostic and therapeutic services to the community. The Center has a rich resource of tests, materials, and equipment to support the clinical practicum experience. A wide variety of outside facilities including rehabilitation centers, hospitals, schools, day care centers, and nursing homes provides additional externship opportunities whereby students can gain broad exposure to a variety of speech-language disorders in multidisciplinary settings.

Applicants to the Masters of Arts (MA) in Speech-Language Pathology program must: Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Submit GRE scores, Have the following undergraduate pre-requisite (21 credits) coursework in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology: CSD 1710- Phonetics, CSD 1720- Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech System, CSD 1730- Language Acquisition, CSD 1740- Introduction to Hearing Science, CSD 2750- Introduction to Audiology, CSD 2760- Speech-Language Pathology I: Language Disorders, CSD 2770- Speech-Language Pathology II: Speech Disorders.
